Economic aspects
According to an EU definition the Forestry and Timber economy is
to be regarded as a single unit. This comprises the areas of forestry,
the procurement and processing of timber, timber trade, cellulose
and paper manufacturing, paper processing including packaging
as well as printing and publishing. This whole complex may be
defined as the so-called “wood-based cluster”, which accounts
for an annual turnover in Germany of over 100 billion euros and
around one million jobs. This is equivalent to around three per
cent of the gross national product.*
