As a rule in Central Europe mixed forests are planted, giving shelter to
humans and animals all year round from wind and rain, and providing
shade in the summer and many different kinds of wood. Wood is a
living material and as such an organic raw material. It has many uses,
a long life-span and its cost is comparatively low whilst offering a
convincing ecological benefit.
From times immemorial wood has provided humans with the
essential material for sustaining life. Tools are also made of
wood as are furniture, toys or jewellery. Wood provides warmth
when burned and protection and a pleasant dwelling climate
as construction material for houses. It is also used in products
where it is no longer recognizable, such as paper and viscose.
Wood has always maintained its position in the on-going
process of industrialisation and still new applications are
being discovered.
